BRICS nations develop unified approaches for AI regulation

It is reported that the BRICS nations are actively collaborating to develop unified approaches for AI regulation, emphasizing responsible and inclusive development. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov highlighted the significance of the upcoming AI summit in India, scheduled for 16 to 20 February 2026, noting that AI regulations are in the early stages of definition and will address security-related aspects. Lavrov affirmed Moscow's support for India's presidency program, underscoring the importance of international coordination in establishing common standards to tackle global challenges such as pandemics, food security, and climate change.

UAE, Malaysia, and Rwanda forge AI alliance to empower Global South

It is reported that the UAE, Malaysia, and Rwanda have signed a strategic partnership to enhance AI adoption in the Global South. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, aims to expand the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) AI Fellowship Programme, initially established by the UAE and Rwanda in 2024. By incorporating Malaysia, the partnership seeks to promote ethical AI governance, facilitate talent exchange, and support sustainable development through joint initiatives.

BRICS statement on AI governance

Following the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio, Brazil, leaders of the BRICS nations have signed a joint statement, which among other things, calls for global AI governance to mitigate potential risks and meet the needs of all countries, including those in the Global South - "A collective global effort is needed to establish AI governance that upholds our shared values, addresses risks, builds trust, and ensures broad and inclusive international collaboration and access."

Brazil unveils AI development programme at BRICS forum

At the BRICS High-Level Forum on Artificial Intelligence, held under Brazil’s rotating presidency, Brazil’s Secretary for Science, Technology, and Innovation for Digital Transformation, Henrique Miguel, highlighted the Brazilian AI Program (PBIA) as a state policy focused on ethical, sustainable, and sovereign AI development to address the country's social, economic, and environmental challenges. Key initiatives include the creation of a top-five global supercomputer powered by renewable energy and the domestic development of high-performance processors through international partnerships. The event also featured the launch of strategic reports and a partnership between the China-BRICS AI Center and the University of São Paulo, emphasizing Brazil’s goal to strengthen cooperation with BRICS countries in areas such as semiconductors, high-performance computing, large language models, and quantum technologies. The forum underscored the importance of robust, inclusive AI ecosystems and equitable data governance to enable fair competition for developing countries, marking a significant step toward more inclusive international AI governance based on South-South cooperation and local capacity building.

BRICS+ sign declaration on AI governance

Foreign Ministers from the BRICS+ countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members as of 1 January 2025, including Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates) have issued a declaration following a meeting in Rio de Janeiro, which includes commitments on AI to prioritise transparency, ethical standards, data protection, and equitable development outcomes, particularly in addressing digital and data inequalities between and within countries. The BRICS+ ministers have emphasised the importance of establishing inclusive and representative international governance for AI within the framework of the United Nations.
